Kids Love Ottomans - And Vice Versa. Ottomans are child friendly - if a small child falls off an ottoman he or she is unlikely to come to any harm. They can be upholstered in child-friendly fabrics, and can offer them a playing surface when they are sitting on the floor. They can be used to sit in front of the TV with a games controller and used as a hurdle in the hall for racing, or as a horse when riding!
The ottomans were the favorite piece of furniture named after the Ottoman Empire, which lasted from 1299 until 1922. The Ottoman Empire spanned three continents, Western Asia, Eastern and Southeastern Europe and North Africa. World War One ended Ottoman rule in these parts of the world, but not the spread of its cherished footstool. Even after the empire lost its power, the name stuck to this very versatile and useful footrest and its popularity spread like wild fire, especially in America. In one sense, the ottomans have reconquered a large share of the world and arguably, more people know the name now than they did when the real Ottomans were in control.
